Gmail & Google Calendar & Contacts
To use Gmail and sync your calendar & contacts with your device, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings application on your device's home screen
- Open Mail, Contacts, Calendars
- Select Add Account…
- Select Google.
- Enter your account information:
- In the Name field, enter your name (first and last).
- In the email field, enter your full user account name (e.g. jjohnson@newulm.k12.mn.us).
- In the Password filed, enter your Google password.
- In the Description field, enter “New Ulm Google”.
- Select Next at the top of your screen.
- Make sure all options are turned on.
After you've completed setup, open the Calendar app on your device. Syncing will automatically begin. Do the same with the Contacts app.
By default, only your primary calendar will be synced with your device. If you have additional calendars you’d like to sync, follow the instructions below.
Sync Multiple Calendars
- Visit the following page from your device's mobile browser: https://www.google.com/calendar/syncselect
- Select the calendars you'd like to sync, then tap Save.
The selected calendars will be displayed on your device at the time of the next sync.
A Better Gmail App
The process above is required in order to make sure your iOS device’s “Share with email” function works properly. However, Google offers a Gmail app that provides more functionality than Apple’s Mail app. Download the free app on your iPhone or iPad via this address:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gmail-email-from-google/id422689480?mt=8#
Once installed, open the app and you will be guided through the short setup process.
Disable Mail Notifications
If using the Gmail app, you will want to disable notifications from Apple’s Mail app to avoid redundant alerts.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Notification Center.
- Scroll down until you find Mail and tap on it.
- Set the Alert Style to “None”.
- Turn off all other options.
