Below are the top reported issues with Google Meet and potential.

Meet is very slow or closes unexpectedly.

Google Meet performance is dependent on many factors. On the host computer:

  • Adjust how you view people to reduce the number of tiles displayed. Older computers (e.g. silver all-in-one iMacs) in particular may struggle to support more than 5 tiles.
  • If using multiple devices, make sure the primary host is the most powerful device.
  • Check your meet incoming and outgoing video quality and set to them to Auto or 360p.
  • Reduce the number of tabs open in Chrome (this includes tabs in other windows). Google recommends no more than 5-10 additional tabs when in a Meet session.
  • Turn off Meet-specific extensions.

My microphone or speakers are not working.

If participants cannot hear you or you do not have audio coming out of your device, open your Meet settings and make sure the correct microphone and speakers are selected.

I do not see the Google Meet moderator tools.

There are several reason you may not see the Google Meet moderator tools.

  • Make sure you are the first staff member to visit the meeting URL even if you don't join the meeting.
  • If you use multiple devices, make sure you are using the device first used to join the meeting. That is the only one that will be granted moderator privileges.

Note about Google Classroom Meet Codes and Hosts

Classroom nicknamed links create a new Meet code whenever the Classroom link is clicked on by any user that has "Video calling" turned on. The host would be the first to click the link and create the Meet code, even if they do not click on "Join now."

Google suggests having the main teacher hide or reset the link for each class to make sure she is the first to click on the link. The other option would be have the main teacher send an invite to the co-teacher once they are ready for them to join. This way they can wait until the main teacher has clicked on the link and acquired the host controls.
